A letter from the founder’s desk

The first 500 practicing musicians

0 of 500 founding places taken

Did you practice today?

If you did — or if you wish you had, and tomorrow you will — then I wrote this letter to you. It’s longer than a normal web page because I’m asking you to help start something, and that deserves more than a slogan and a button.

My whole life around musicians, I’ve noticed the same quiet injustice: the work that makes a musician — the daily, repetitive, unwitnessed work — is the one part of the profession no organization has ever been built around.

There are unions for contracts. Associations for teachers’ certification and for school policy. Organizations for strings, for percussion, for chamber music. Apps that count your minutes. All useful. And not one of them is organized around the thing you actually do every day.

So we started the International Association of Practicing Musicians: a network of people who do the work — teachers, performers, directors, students, devoted amateurs — connected so the work gets seen, and so it opens doors.

Why I’m writing to you now, and not in a year

Here’s the honest situation. IAPM is new. The newsletter is running, the directory is live, the opportunities board is filling — but there’s no decades-old letterhead here, no wall of testimonials. What there is, right now, is a founding class forming.

The first 500 members of an association aren’t customers. They’re co-founders in everything but paperwork. They set the tone of the community, they tell us which programs matter and which are noise, and their names are on it permanently.

That’s worth more to us than full-price dues. So we made the trade explicit: the first 500 members join at $9.95 a year — locked for life. Not a first-year teaser. The rate never increases for you, as long as your membership stays active.

Why exactly 500? Because that’s a founding class small enough to know by name — and large enough to be a real community from day one. When it’s full, it’s full.

Exactly what a Founding Membership includes

  • A numbered membership, #1–500, permanently. Your number is yours for as long as IAPM exists. Low numbers will mean something here the way low license plates do.
  • $9.95/year, locked for life. Plainly conditioned: the lock holds as long as your membership stays active. Cancel, and the rate doesn’t come back — that’s the honest mechanics of it, stated up front.
  • Your name on the founders’ wall. A permanent public page listing the 500 people who started this.
  • The Founding Member badge on your directory listing, forever — plus spotlight eligibility from day one.
  • Everything standard members get: the full weekly newsletter and archive, the member directory, the opportunities board, and member perks including the exclusive Bravura IAPM plan.

One thing founders do not get: a better membership. Founders get a better rate and a permanent distinction. The association itself is the same for member #3 and member #5,000 — anything else would poison the thing we’re all building.

The honest math

Standard IAPM membership is $49 a year, and it will stay the real price — member #501 pays it. Here’s how that compares to what practicing musicians actually pay elsewhere:

  • NAfME (school music educators): about $157/year once mandatory state dues stack on.
  • MTNA (music teachers): $107 national plus state and local dues — typically $127 to $182 all-in.
  • ASTA (string teachers): $125/year professional — and $49 is their student rate.

Read that last one again. At $49, IAPM charges professionals what the legacy associations charge students. We can do that because we carry no chapter bureaucracy, no dues stacking — and because Bravura sponsors the association openly, the way a patron sponsors a festival.

So this is not the cheap option. It’s the honestly-priced one. And the founding rate — $9.95, less than 84 cents a month, less than a set of strings — is below anything we found anywhere in the association world, for life rather than for a promotional year.

Where the count stands

0 of 500 founding places are taken. That number is real — it comes from the same database that issues member numbers, and it’s the same number on every page of this site. We don’t do countdown theater.

What happens at #501

Nothing dramatic. The price becomes $49 a year. No “final extension,” no surprise re-opening of founding places next quarter, no second founding class. Membership at $49 will still be fair — it’s the founding rate and the number that won’t come back.

The guarantee, in one sentence: if IAPM isn’t what you hoped in your first 30 days, email us and we’ll refund your $9.95 — no forms, no questions.

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably the kind of musician this was built for. The work is already yours. Come do it where it counts.

Warmly,
The founder’s desk, IAPM

P.S. — The founding class is capped at 500 because we want to know it by name. When it’s full, membership is $49/year — still fair, but the $9.95 lifetime rate and the founder’s number won’t come back. As I write this, 500 of the 500 places remain.
